The creation of pharmaceutical drugs has been shifting toward what are known as biologics – biological drugs. The previous generation of chemically synthesized drugs are pretty much one-size-fits-all. Drugs like paracetamol work for the majority of people in safe doses, they come in stable pill form, and it is difficult to accidentally overdose. Overall, they are safe to self-administer, relatively effective and cheap to produce, transport and sell.
Biological drugs, on the other hand, are very different in terms of properties and formulations. They are much more complicated, specific, and targeted, meaning greater efficacy and fewer side effects, However, most biological drugs need to be stored in refrigerated units at exact temperature ranges to keep them stable. They also need to be administered in very specific doses tailored to the individual and usually injected intravenously. As such, they tend to be stored, handled, and administered in hospitals, health centers and GPs, complicating the delivery of these medications. Biological drugs are harder to transport and store, especially in countries without reliable refrigeration or power, making global adoption of these drugs much more difficult.

SMS is in its thirties and is still going strong. It should be even stronger. I keep hearing that SMS is a commodity and when people refer to business SMS (Application-to-Person SMS, A2P) as ‘bulk messaging’ I really hate it. It’s doing a disservice to a mobile digital channel that requires zero introductions, that more than 5 billion people globally are completely comfortable with right now, and for which no internet connectivity or fancy smartphones are required. If you send an SMS right now to a friend or loved one, the chances are they will read its content within a handful of minutes, unless they’re driving, asleep, or in a meeting or a cinema … and even then, their first loo break will see them check their phone. Email just can’t compete with the “open rate” of SMS. This makes SMS very valuable.

Here in the UK, it’s commonplace for people to receive SMS from businesses, the content fulfilling any number of use cases. It’s versatile, ubiquitous and something that people are comfortable with today. Very comfortable. And it drives urgency. Just think of how long it takes for somebody to receive an SMS and for them to pick up their phone in response to the flash or beep. Not long at all.
