To give you an idea of how important contingency is, think about the content you like to watch on television.

If you’re looking forward to small hours coverage of the upcoming general election, re-think the roles of the rotating talking heads the main presenter chats to through the night. They’re not just there to provide insight and/or spin as the results come in, they’re backup in case the feeds from the election counts go down or if declaring a winner takes longer than expected.

The creation of pharmaceutical drugs has been shifting toward what are known as biologics – biological drugs. The previous generation of chemically synthesized drugs are pretty much one-size-fits-all. Drugs like paracetamol work for the majority of people in safe doses, they come in stable pill form, and it is difficult to accidentally overdose. Overall, they are safe to self-administer, relatively effective and cheap to produce, transport and sell.

Biological drugs, on the other hand, are very different in terms of properties and formulations. They are much more complicated, specific, and targeted, meaning greater efficacy and fewer side effects, However, most biological drugs need to be stored in refrigerated units at exact temperature ranges to keep them stable. They also need to be administered in very specific doses tailored to the individual and usually injected intravenously. As such, they tend to be stored, handled, and administered in hospitals, health centers and GPs, complicating the delivery of these medications. Biological drugs are harder to transport and store, especially in countries without reliable refrigeration or power, making global adoption of these drugs much more difficult.

Brain injuries, dementia, most cancers, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron disease, strokes, osteoarthritis, Crohn’s disease, Parkinson’s disease … the list of conditions where we have little to offer sufferers goes on. After decades and decades of research into these diseases, why has there been so little progress in medicine? Why has it been so unproductive?

There is no escaping it: The acceleration of climate change is increasing the incidence of wildfires. Each year, the length of the fire season extends, and more regions are impacted, resulting in tragic loss of life, billions in economic damage and catastrophic contributions to a global CO2 emissions crisis.

Traditional detection and management have worked heroically for many years but the need for faster and more advanced wildfire detection methods has never been more evident. It’s also clear that it’s time for a radical new approach.

Enter Dryad, which has introduced the ultimate low-cost solution that “smells” outdoor fires at the earliest possible stage. With potentially millions of sensors able to be deployed across millions of acres of forest to provide ultra-early detection, first responders will be able to identify, stop and contain fires before they become catastrophic.

SMS is in its thirties and is still going strong. It should be even stronger. I keep hearing that SMS is a commodity and when people refer to business SMS (Application-to-Person SMS, A2P) as ‘bulk messaging’ I really hate it. It’s doing a disservice to a mobile digital channel that requires zero introductions, that more than 5 billion people globally are completely comfortable with right now, and for which no internet connectivity or fancy smartphones are required. If you send an SMS right now to a friend or loved one, the chances are they will read its content within a handful of minutes, unless they’re driving, asleep, or in a meeting or a cinema … and even then, their first loo break will see them check their phone. Email just can’t compete with the “open rate” of SMS. This makes SMS very valuable.

Four years ago, I shifted from a traditional legal career path into the complex world of defense technology. The transition to this sci-fi world of artificial intelligence (AI) and futuristic concepts has been an eye opener. The defense industry has always been at the forefront of technological innovation, from materials, to medicines, to mobile phones and the internet, and the rise of artificial intelligence is no exception. AI has the potential to revolutionize military operations, from enhancing the decision-making process, to automating routine tasks; taking over jobs we consider too ‘dull, dirty, or dangerous’ for humans.
